Well, okay i'm an ass for not keeping this up. Mah bad. So deal with it.
Okay, people often ask me about my being a musician (where i studied, who i play with, what horn do i play, etc.). This entry will answer those burning questions enquiring minds want to know.
I started my "formal" musical training at Ilima Intermediate school. The elementary school depository in Ewa Beach, Hawai'i. We were under the tutelege of Mr. Kumura, overall a nice guy. In the 7th grade, we took a music theory test and whoever had the highest score could pick the instrument they wanted to play. Originally I wanted to play drums (cause i wouldn't have to carry a case around). By the time my turn came around, all the percussion slots were taken. Nonchalantly, I said, " I GUESS i'll play Alto Sax". Learned the fundamental things that year, then in 8th grade, i ended up playing Baritone Sax, cause for some reason there were no Altos left. WTF. Played both Alto and Bari throughout high school. Contests, recitals, auditions, yada, yada, yada.
Started as a music major at the University of Hawaii. It was a shock. I hadn't learned enough formal theory and just floundered in my classes. I did well in my applied courses. I totally lost my direction and focus. Left the school and did the design thing. At that time i've met other players who were kinda in the same boat. Looking back, I didn't know who to ask for help.
Got together with friends to just learn songs. Next thing you know we were giggin'. Our first band: FBI - i'm too embarassed to say the full name - I didn't think of it.
The next incarnation was El Toupe' - played funk/jazz.
here's a list of the bands i've been in:
Dread Ashanti
Plush Nugget
Kamakazi Kong
Bob Jones and Hardrive
Eight -o- Eight
SugahDaddy
Currently: Ooklah the Moc and occasionally the Theo Gonsalves Ensemble.
SugahDaddy won a Hoku award for the "Rock" category. Ended up seperating. Playing with Ooklah has been great. Its a very prolific band with a ton of tunes, which i'm still learning.
some studio stuff:
a couple of Viva Milk commercials
"Affordable Caskets" radio spot
Natural Vibrations "The Circle" CD
BET "Volume III" CD
thats as much as i can remember so far. let me know if you actually read this far.
thank you very much.
